We all know the beauty that Sevillian and artisan tile has and how versatile it is, it can be placed almost anywhere we can think of.

We also know that the city of Seville is full, full of tiles that adorn our streets, our temples and why not, also our houses.

What you may not know is that Sevillian tiles are internationally famous all over the world , and have been famous for a long time, which means that Sevillian handmade tiles can be seen in monuments and buildings around the world.

Sevillian crafts in Peru

We can see a clear example of what we discussed in Peru, in the Santo Domingo Convent , which is a very important enclave for the Latin American country because it is the place where the country's national anthem was composed and because in addition to hosting the first University Peruvian, three national saints are resting in it.

The convent was built in the middle of the 16th century, and in it there is a strong presence of Sevillian tiles.

Its presence is quickly noticed as soon as you enter the first cloister, which is completely decorated with the artisan tiles of our land, with colors and also some images embodied in them that are reminiscent of the Triana neighborhood of Seville.

You might be wondering how those tiles ended up there.

Between 1604 and 1606, the tiles that were placed in the main cloister of the Convent were brought from our Seville to Lima. They were manufactured and made by the Hernando de Valladares workshop. From that moment on, the monk Fray Francisco de Avedaño made sure that the architectural work was not discontinued or unfinished, for which he entrusted the expert ceramist Garrido with the work. It is this artist who leaves his mark on this marvelous cloister by writing on some tiles "I fecit Garrido", a phrase that can still be seen today.

The work contract stipulated that around six thousand large tiles would be used in the work and the small tiles that were necessary, which would be the same that would be used in the Sala De Palacio.
