How artisan tiles are made

In Sevilla crafts we are specialists in personalized work , and in making each of the tiles of our work one by one to achieve a unique result. Taking advantage of this small video that shows part of the process of one of our works, today we want to let you show your head at the great work that is behind each of the tiles and artisan pieces, that is, the process of creating artisan tiles.

This process is made up of several main phases:

• Preparation: The raw material of the tiles must be prepared to reach the process that will turn them into handcrafted pieces. They must be in the best shape, and of the highest quality possible. For this, the pieces go through phases of sieving, washing, and grinding among others, which manage to eliminate particles, imperfections, and achieve a homogeneous mass.

• Molding: Once the raw materials are in the ideal conditions, they pass to the molds to acquire the shape that the artisan tiles or the concrete pieces will have.

• Drying: Already in the desired shape, artisan tiles must remove all excess water in a slow way to prevent imperfections from forming or the piece from cracking during the same drying process, or the firing process later.
• Glazing: This process is reflected in the video, where we see the artisan tiles passing through an enamelling bell. Not all tiles follow this procedure, since some, depending on the material, do not need enamel, and others require a more delicate enamel application, and carried out by hand.

• Firing: This essential phase solidifies the shape of the artisan tiles, giving us, together with the glazing, the final product, lacking only the application of paint. Each type of tile needs a different firing temperature, and there are several types of ovens to meet those needs, but the most important thing is that, as in the drying process, the temperature changes must be gradual to avoid damage.

• Painting: The final phase for tiles, which puts the artisanal touch to be done hand by hand, and one by one.
